Maybe he should spend on ESPN 9 - 12 so they can broadcast poker, have a channel dedicated to the hype other ESPN broadcasters hype about themselves hyping, denigrate hockey because they lost the broadcast rights, and express shock & outrage at steroid use in MLB. That's 4 channels of 24/7 of something for which there is no demand because they already saturated all of those markets

"This budget is inseparable from this economy." "I am as angry as anybody..." The audience for this has turned away to other chores The POTUS is restating weeks of campaigning for the stimulus plan and the budget plan. Nothing new. Restatement. No news. No news crisis. No new answers.
John Batchelor Tue Mar 24 19:13:10 2009 CDT #
John Batchelor says:
"...that they are paying attention to things that are going on in Washington..." Here is the best possibility for this star turn performance. The White House team believes that the audience has turned away. That leaves the Obama team to face Congress and the media. Not a fair fight. Congress will win any face-off. The media roots for the melodrama. The polls must show the smart political guys in the White House (Emanuel, Axelrod) that the big audience has left the theater.

So yes, the government can create demand temporarily, but that cant fill the export gap forever.
If no one is buying then none of this is going to work!!!!!!

Where is the average citizen going to get the money to buy it?
None of this addresses that.
March 25 (Bloomberg) -- Japans exports plunged by a record in February as deepening recessions in the U.S. and Europe sapped demand for the countrys cars and electronics.
Overseas shipments plummeted 49.4 percent from a year earlier, the sharpest decline since at least 1980, when the government started to keep comparable data, the Finance Ministry said today in Tokyo. Economists predicted a 47.6 percent drop.
Prime Minister Taro Aso is compiling his third economic stimulus package as a deepening slowdown in Japans overseas markets puts thousands out of work at home, threatening domestic demand. Finance Minister Kaoru Yosano said this week said that a new package of as much as 20 trillion yen is not out of line as the economy heads for its worst recession since 1945.
Theres been a structural shock to the manufacturing sector, said Hiroshi Shiraishi, an economist at BNP Paribas in Tokyo. So yes, the government can create demand temporarily, but that cant fill the export gap forever.

I think Obama believes he can turn the US into a more socially minded democracy, so to say, more like the Commonwealth countries. In his own mind, he doesn't want 'socialism,' he wants something like Canada, New Zealand, Australia. But it's to late for that, America went on a different path a long time ago.
OTOH, if we're lucky, we may end up with some notions towards a new international economic order, and maybe even some decent enforceable international regulation, which people have been talking about since I was in college, er, some time ago. O:-)

BHO still doesn't get it. There is not enough time or treasure or sweat or consensus to do half the things he is planning. He still thinks this is just a recession. Scripted questions. He doesn't understand how FDIC works. BHO has a 50s perspective of the jobs market. He really doesn't believe taxes suppress entrepeneurship. He doesn't understand the difference twixt illiquid and insolvent. Middle-class tax cut is gone. Carbon Cap-n-trade is still alive. Uhh oh, what he has planned for Medicare is so bad it requires bipartisan support. He's planning a budget that assumes a growing economy. No clue as to what's wrong with Mexico.

Bankers recommending giving more money to bad banks should have set off some alarm bells and O' has yet to make a case why that would be even considered a good idea.
I fear that O' has not been in a leadership role long enough to have been let down by an adviser and as a result, we are going to have to wait for Tim to fail spectacularly before we get some leadership.

[W]e’ve put in place a comprehensive strategy designed to attack this crisis on all fronts. It’s a strategy to create jobs, to help responsible homeowners, to restart lending, and to grow our economy over the long-term. And we are beginning to see signs of progress.
Historically these things have only been successful when carried out by individuals and individual businesses.
Nobody has figured out how to manage a 13 trillion dollar business, so we allow the individuals to create and manage the economy at the microscopic level.
I don't think this changed when Obama took office.

Rob Dawg, thanks for responding. Romney's religiosity was a turn-off, and tanked him. But I doubt he (or anyone else) could turn this string of events around any better than BO and co. are doing. Why did Wall St. pick BO (if, indeed, that was what happened) and not Romney, who by all appearances was better connected?
p.s.- not trying to pick on you, but you seem to have strong opinions that are representative on this board and in the larger population, and I am truly curious as to your response. For the record, I am a BO supporter who has been dismayed at his recent actions, but I do not pretend to understand the political process, insofar as it is circuitous, but, IMO, BO seems to me to be the best in the business, as of now. I know your 'besides me' comment was in (half)jest, but have you ever considered public office, or are you content just to take pot shots from the side-lines? Rob Dawg, sir, I respectfully disagree that the religious aspect is unimportant, especially when the religion in question is Mormonism, of which a more ridiculous variant of Christianity I cannot imagine. If he was only professing his "belief" to garner the support of the faithful, then he was being only more duplicitous in his attempt to gain power. Our constitution was written with the purposeful intent on guaranteeing a secular society, free from the constraints of religeous bigotry, even though the founders, by and large, believed in a supreme being, as was common in their day. I am not supposing that you subscribe to such a belief as Mormonism, although I might stand to be corrected. Again, please do not think I am singling you out, only insofar as you seem to represent the opinions of a number of posters on this board, all of whom are free to speak for themselves. TIA.
