The question is who is going to provide the help?
A guy with a pile of printer paper?
Everybody talks about how unprecedented intervention is going to prevent another Great Depression.
But this intervention is all on paper.
None of it is real.
Who is it that has this vast reservoir of intelligence, knowledge, motivation, credibility, competence and morality needed to save the economy?
We're going to print it and vote it into existence?

RobW at 2:31:25, to add to your list, don't forget "Lickety-Splat" (see wikipedia for full synopsis), where the Coyote drops a bunch of explosive darts on the Roadrunner. Naturally all miss, and go soaring off into the distance, except for one that loops around and blew up the balloon. Through the rest of the episode, every time the Coyote had another scheme set up, one of those darts would fly in and explode in just the right way to ruin everything. Who knows what financial bombs are still floating around out there?

Develop the most important strategic option this country has. Spend all the retarded amount of money on increasing teacher pay to pull knowledgeable people out of industry (they won't have their jobs anyway) and get rid of 40:1 student teacher ratios. The teachers are piss poor for 90% of students anyway. Educate the next generation in math, hard sciences, WORLD history, WORLD geography, WORLD literature and critical thinking, not test taking. Show how these are all interconnected. Not discrete. Our world is not discrete. Do away with standardized testing.
Turn the propaganda machine onto domestic energy sustainability and EFFICIENCY. Sustainability = renewables, nuclear and fossil fuels. Efficiency goes from Canyoneros to 800W power supplies in PCs that sound like a 747 taking off.
Urban renewal, beautify cities, get rid of the chronic american pyschosis by selling outside as a pleasant place to be. This gets rid of high isurance costs because everyone will stop looking for some condition on which to blame their unhappiness.
In the meantime, we eat humble pie and pay off whatever actual debts we've accrued either by barter or fiat if anyone still wants our promises.

The slide represents the biggest downturn since the association began compiling data in 1958.The Frankfurt-based VDMA now expects machinery production and factory building to plummet somewhere between 10 and 20 percent for the full year -- much worse than the 7 percent drop it forecast six weeks ago.

For retail customers, GMAC will further enhance and expand its already very competitive retail financing programs, adding:
-- Certain rate reductions for new and used vehicle financing.
-- An increase in allowable advance rates for 60-month or less financing terms.
-- The acceptance of automotive finance applications for customers with credit bureau scores below 620. Customers will still need to qualify, but this will expand the credit available to a broader spectrum of buyers.

I'm not big on government spending, but I say double or triple the pay for teachers and greatly increase the requirements/standards for becoming one.
This is one of the few things I'd approve spending more money on because I think it's absolutely critical (not so much for facilities though). Plus I think teachers should have real world as well as academic experience. I think it's dangerous to have an education system that's too insular and caught up in the Ivory Tower.
Grade school teachers I know have asked me if I'd be interested in teaching because they've noticed I have an interest in trying to "teach" people things (for better or worse) and teachers are needed for the subjects I'm familiar with.
In the industry I'm in I can make 3x-5x what a teacher makes with relatively little stress and effort (I can surf the web half the day and still get glowing performance reviews and a big check).
I don't see how the teaching profression can compete for talent, but I think it's essential for our future that they do.

ac,
I have to dissagree some what. I think alot of the issue is the drive in the students (or lack there of) today. Its not the kids fault either, most people are naturally driven. Its the parent.
Where I went to grade school it was K-8. 400 kids. They doubled the size of the school twice since I've left and added fancy computers and teaching walls etc. Its now 450 kids. The kids come out no smarter.
Granted you're talking about teachers which I'm more interested spending on that the physical facilities still. Its the parents (mostly) not the teachers or the buildings.
You can take the kid out of jersey but you cant take jersey out of the kid. The same is true of drive.... Just my two cents....

April 1 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said there are “encouraging signs” that financial markets are recovering and expressed confidence in the response of global policy makers to the crisis.
“You’re seeing encouraging signs of improvement in our markets -- we want to reinforce that,” Geithner said today in a Bloomberg Television interview in London. “I’ve never seen this much support around the world.”

I went to high school in fairly decent school district (in terms of income).
I first learned grammar in college Spanish. It interested me to think there might be some English analog to the "subjunctive tense" in Spanish - that English might have a set of rules behind it too.
I learned most of what I know about English at my first job reading about English grammar in my spare time.
In case it's not clear: I grew up and was educated in the United States, not some foreign country.

I love it that your illustration is a perfect illustration of the area fallacy that such graphs often portray. Presented in "How to Lie With Statistics", the area fallacy is that a graph maker will create a figure, like the coyote, with the height proportional to what they want to inflate. As the Coyote gets taller, his area goes up by the square.
In your illustration, the final coyote is 4 times taller than the first. Yet his apparent size is 16 times greater, making it look that the 4X change over two years is actually 16X.
Thanks for the chance to point that out!
