We are in a completely different situation, we have negative reserves,” she said, pointing to Germany’s €1,547bn public debt. Although it had a balanced public sector budget last year and is set to show a deficit of only 2.5 per cent this year, Germany has a bigger public debt in relation to GDP than both the US and the UK.
German GDP was €2,492bn in 2008, http://www.destatis.de/jetspeed/portal/cms/Sites/destatis/Internet/EN/Content/Statistics/VolkswirtschaftlicheGesamtrechnungen/Inlandsprodukt/Tabellen/Content75/Gesamtwirtschaft,templateId=renderPrint.psml

Lots of charts and such. He also has a good article on Spain and why their mortgage rates are going up instead of down.
So it now seems virtually certain that the Q1 Eurozone GDP contraction will be far worse than the Q4 2008 one. Taking into account that the eurozone contracted by 0.2% in Q3 2008, and by 1.5% in Q4, then, in my humble opinion, the data we are seeing for this quarter are entirely consistent with a 2% quarterly contraction (or an annualised 8% rate of contraction) or more. As I said last month, not quite Japan territory yet, but certainly not far behind. And for those who simply don't believe the PMIs can tell you so much, here is Markit's own chart, showing the strong underlying relationship between movements in GDP and the *flash* composite PMI. Pretty impressive I would say.

Beats the investigation, insurance fraud, fines and jailtime alternative.

(Partly Humorous) Why Californians Are Doomed, Here On Earth and Thereafter
As some of you already know, Pluto’s status as a planet is at best questionable (it is more like the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter than a planet; it is neither) the California politicians didn’t care what the scientists thought and wanted to assert themselves to repair any psychological damage that the revelation might cause on softie Californicators:
California Assembly Bill HR 36 (bipartisan proposed legislation): “Where as recent astronomical discoveries, including Pluto’s oblong orbit…, have led astronomers to question the planetary status of Pluto; and where as the mean spirited International Astronomical Union decided on August 24th [the same day as the bill was dated] to disrespect Pluto by stripping it of its planetary status and reclassify it as lowly dwarf planet; and where as Pluto was discovered in 1930 by an American, Clyde Tambaugh, in Lowell Observatory, Arizona, and this discovery resulted in millions of Californians being taught that Pluto was the ninth planet in the solar system; and where as Pluto named after the Roman god of the underworld and affectionately sharing the name of California’s most famous animated the dog [Disney character] has special meaning to California history and culture; and where as downgrading Pluto’s status will cause psychological harm to some Californians who question their place in the universe and worry about the instability of universal constants…”

Call me cynical but IMO, the global community's normal role in a grave crisis or calamity is to vouchsafe its status as truly serious by failing to act on it. I vote whimper. It's not that it can't do anything, it just only does what everyone was going to do anyway.
Meetings scheduled to schedule meetings is my predicted result. If they decide to have a global currency attempt or someone leaves with a Ren Hoek-like cry of "FAT BLOATED IDIOTS!" that will be great fun to watch. Ulktimately though,I expect another couple dozen weekends at major resort destinations with gournmet chow for the big dogs will be the result, because when did the global community ever stage a major response to aserious crisis that worked and wasn't essentially one person's idea with a institution held up as a fig leaf.
It's not impossible. Slavery is pretty much dead. Smallpox likewise. It's just not something to bet on. I would definitely bet more heavily on miscarriage than success, though. There's too many already-dead players and people dissembling and outright power plays. With 20 parties, if it's not a coup de main where the EU, Ruissa and China all show up with the paperwork in order and the attack planned, it's just gonna be a liar's talking club.

I'm really getting a kick out of this Obama stuff. It's a pity you can't send headlines like "Obama Backs Banks, Seeks to Block Fair-Lending Probe" back in time.
I must confess a certain surprise in how quickly and completely Obama has sold out. I knew Big Content was going to get a few wins under a Democratic administration (Big Content is to the Democrats what Big Oil is to the GOP), but siding with the banks against fraud inquiries just seems unnecessary.

The truth is, the intermediary and insurer have done a fairly decent job over the years of corralling the budgets from time to time to make sure everything didn't completely fly off the rails.
I will give the dealers the benefit of helping to keep the good ship afloat for so long.
However, insurance and hand-holding can only go so far. For instance, it dumbstruck me that Warren said he had priced his offer to the insurers too high because he hadn't thought about the effects the insurance itself had had on behavior and was glad they gave him the cold shoulder.
I would have expected, analytically, he would have assumed the drift.
On a side note, and very quietly, munis exist as a very legal inside trade, on a LOT of different levels.

Byz - you are bang on point as usual, best line "liars talking club". That's good.
In my experience, including over the last 18 months of these kinds of gatherings on the crisis but significantly longer before that in finance and other contexts, is that obdurate positivity and assertion are undermined by market signals, in, around, and following the issuance of the blandishments of the pressers and communiques. I've negotiated these damned things, and it's incredibly frustrating recognizing the disconnect, and what's about to happen next once the phrasing is put into the blander and comes out looking risible, and the interests which ensure these outcomes.
Like I've said, my new gig is in RM, well, RM testing and challenge, really, and this mindset prevails. That there is substantial continuity in the world, there is some bad news, we will continue to monitor closely, but our basic models and judgments will apply. Roughly at this point I want to strangle the head of credit risk and bark on about gaussian cupola functions in the pricing of CDSs, and point to Greenspan's FT article today saying the entire structure, modelling, credibility, and ongoing functioning of most $RM has failed.
Certainly my view. Nice of Alan to catch up.

Blah blah blah. I've heard this forever, and it'll never happen. More science and engineering would require paying scientists more money so that more people would want to do it. But why would you ever pay a scientist a lot of money? Most scientists seem completely willing to work for peanuts. IF you win a Nobel prize you get $1M. Wow.

The article about Portland is rather misleading. Powell's is putting expansion to one side, but they are already huge-- the main store covers a city block, there are several other huge stores, plus a web store, and several warehouses. Powell's is probably the most powerful independent bookseller in the nation, and they can really throw their weight around here, politically. The expansion was a bubble idea to begin with, IMO. It won't kill them to scale back their ambitions a bit. It's Music Millenium, the independent music store, that's reall in trouble, but of course the NYT didn't cover that.
MSM sux.
The other small manufacturers are also having problems, of course, but the total picture isn't even remotely as bad as say, Detroit or Florida. In fact the worst prolems are in the rural areas, where the unemployment could get over 25%, IMO. At that point, counties go BK and merge into the next door county, with possible cascade effects. Pun not intended. Just my 2 shekels.
BTW, Mark Thoma is an Oregonian, IIRC, a professor in Eugene.

Well, it's really not about what Stewart said in 2000 or what's happened since.
It's about where gold goes from here.
It's my take that gold is now under some serious selling pressure from somebody with a lot of it. Could be IMF, could be oil exporters or somebody else. I get that mainly by watching gold vs.silver. Since silver isnot under as much selling pressure, it's doing somewhat better.
But mainly, despite the selling pressure, gold has held up pretty well. So, there is lots of buying demand. I am sticking by my target of $1,200 on gold and $20 on silver this year.
Tough week for most commodities. But that's to be expected after the huge run-up last week. Almost all commodities will do well the rest of this year.
