Comrade & Capitalists,
I guess you answered the question as to why newspapers are going out of business all over. People don't want to pay $20 a month for ads and press releases disguised as news stories.

I used to work at a company that was one of the largest employers in a certain Rocky Mt state. The local papers would print our press releases as stories verbatim, with maybe two sentences and the headline added.

Obviously, I can't speak for Byz. However, I am in awe of his gentle logic at times.

The same goes for Pavel (although I'm not a Christian). I must say I was very disappointed to see so much animosity toward Pavel and Homedad the other night.

However, in a similar way to them, I'm appreciative of the your thoughts and willingness to express yourself. I've gathered that you are of a liberal bent and that is good.

I personally refuse to accept the false dichotomy that is currently defined as: Democrat vs. Republican. However, perhaps I've seen too much and it has made me cynical.

In any case, America is a wonderful country.

In the projections for the table above, the CBO has assumed no cost of living adjustments (COLAs) in 2010, 2011, or 2012 and a return to economic growth next year. If either of those assumptions proves wrong, the table above gets smoked to the downside. I give that a better than 90% chance of happening.
From a budget-busting perspective, last year where the US government had a $73 billion Social Security surplus to spend, this year it will be a paltry $16 billion and next year it will be a number indistinguishable from zero. It is hard to overstate the importance of this shift.
This means several things. Instead of $703 billion coming in over the next 10 years, the current (overly optimistic) projection calls for only $83 billion. This means at least another $620 billion in fresh borrowing will have to occur.

Taxpayer Loses’

Nobel prize-winning economists Paul Krugman, a professor at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, and Joseph Stiglitz, a professor at the Business School of Columbia University in New York, blasted Geithner’s plan for putting the taxpayer on the hook for losses with what they say is little likelihood of success.

“The Geithner plan works only if and when the taxpayer loses big time,” Stiglitz wrote in the New York Times this week. “With the government absorbing the losses, the market doesn’t care if the banks are ‘cheating’ them by selling their lousiest assets, because the government bears the cost.”

Krugman wrote in the Times last month that “Obama is squandering his credibility” with the plan.

In Orange Co. CA, our local paper the Orange County Register has long been a mouthpiece for the local republican clubs. Republicans run around here pretending to support the troops, demanding immigration reform and screaming for balanced budgets. The Register prints their blather, unchecked. People have been able to find on the internet, that the republicans have in fact held secret trials at Camp Pendelton, sending our own soldiers to prison, they have allowed illegals to invade our nation and imprisoned our own INS agents for protecting our children against invading drug dealers and they invented the bailout and deficit spending. Republicans still can't figure out why their own constituents have left them.

Superb point. I have seen several instances where the MSM and the Pres himself, deride blogs and the internet. I will not be too sad to see the MSM go. Community journalism is the way to go. No barriers to entry, yet. It does not take a journalism degree from a prestigious uni to communicate useful info. For TPTB, the world is turning upside down.

Also, as much as they deride blogs, the are reading them, or having thier minions do so.

That side has been neglected as of late, but it is my hope and intention to have it just as easy to use as the "main" one.

CRCizer can actually act as its own comment system. This is one of the things I was trying to explain. It synchronizes with JS-kit because JS-kit is the official comment system, but its not necessary.

If desired, CR could link directly to CRCizer and then we could just turn off JSkit synchronization.

This also means that if JSkit goes down, CRCizer will still function fine on its own.

Back in our house hunting days we looked at things that would have made these videos. The house that was a converted meat locker with the aluminum grocery store door, the root cellar opening inside the house, the carport converted to living space with red painted poles in the room and the utility sink for a kitchen sink. Or the house with the 5% sloping floor in the porch converted to a kitchen, no water supply, a wood stove in the basement with no ductwork to the house, and the burn marks on the wall where it appeared lightning had followed the wiring. I wish I would have had a video of these and others.

One thing to be aware about, re: citizen's arrests: a "citizen" doesn't have the immunity that a police officer has, so the citizen had better be right about the arrest. What the police officer's immunity does is that it eliminates the officer's personal responsibility for anything that might go wrong, although the city could be found liable for a mistake.

That's a function of tool leverage, scope and size of knowledge domains. The mythical man month is not a simple formula, it's a four-dimensional statistical distribution. The sunspot cycle is behaving a little like the stock market. Just when you think it has hit bottom, it goes even lower.

2008 was a bear. There were no sunspots observed on 266 of the year's 366 days (73%). To find a year with more blank suns, you have to go all the way back to 1913, which had 311 spotless days: plot. Prompted by these numbers, some observers suggested that the solar cycle had hit bottom in 2008.

Maybe not. Sunspot counts for 2009 have dropped even lower. As of March 31st, there were no sunspots on 78 of the year's 90 days (87%).

As desperation sets in among home sellers, . . .

Anecdote from Bubbleville, CA: for some houses, there are now multiple bids, including bids above the listing price. I confirmed this with multiple sources this evening. Also, the banks aren't interested in package deals. They can do better selling them one at a time.

Now, 95% of all sales are FHA or cash. No illusion about a return to yesteryear. The buyers are basically former renters, i.e., first-timers, or folks who have come from 'down below' where relative prices are much higher.

There are still plenty of houses available under $100K, whether its the older stuff or the less desirable newer tracts. But there is change in the wind.

Call them knife-catchers if you want. There are a lot of sales happening.

Private home sellers might well be desparate. I don't see how they can compete with the REOs and I expect the volume of REOs to continue. Prices, though, may have stablized.

A growing number of workers say they are willing to accept a salary cut or forfeit vacation time to keep their jobs.

Forty percent now say they would take a cut in pay, compared with 30 percent at the end of 2008, while 30 percent now say they would forfeit time off, compared with 24 percent at the end of last year, the survey found.

ATM card and $19 in the bank says:

“…good claim to title or they can legally shoot him in the balls.

…they could shoot his balls in self defense.”

Wow. 1 currency now [yogi] went to one tough law school. Wonder what they discussed in class…

Civ Pro: You could file a 12b-6 motion, or you can just shoot Plaintiff in the balls.

Torts: If you get shot in the balls at a firing range, Defendant can argue assumption of the risk.

Contracts: UCC might provide a remedy, or you can point a gun at Seller’s balls and try to settle.

Bet nobody ever said, “I’m not prepared” at that school.

Housing Bust Hits Manhattan

Outsider - thank you, I personally think the NY CRE bust is going to make Jim the Realtor waayy jealous about the HST possibilities.

Won't happen in DC, cos there's so much damned gov.

Best info recently, DHS is moving to St Elizabeths, the former mental hospital in Anacostia.

Fk me, you can't make this stuff up.

Citizen's arrest? Better make sure they don't have some good claim to title or they can legally shoot him in the balls.

If they were there taking shelter from a storm, they could shoot his balls in self defense.

Agreed. I was just thinking that he was right up on false imprisonment or kidnapping unless they are a formal legal "agent" of the owner and the local trespassing laws are VERY generous to ownership. I know around here, you had better speak from authority and have advised them to leave and had the advisement declined before you escalate, regardless of if you're about to shoot them or just asking them to leave your grass.

Consider the situation from the defendant's point of view -- he wakes up to find someone securing his wrists with nylon zip ties while a video camera rolls. What would your resonse be? At least around here, kidnapping is assumed to be a prelude to murder most grotesque, and you are permitted to defend yourself against it with mortal blows.

I have to say I would not feel bad for zapping Jim in the face with a Glock and then finding out he's a zany video-blogging realtor, and I don't know that the court would think I should either. Regardless, anything like that is really stupid and you should never do it unless you are restraining someone from escaping the scene of some violent felony. Restraining another person is a very serious legal act, tantamount to killing them.

Byz - agree on the legal point, but it's fun to watch...

Man, imagine trying that in Virginia. Hoomama. The pickups and gunracks are only the public expression of a certain 2nd Amd way of life.

Tom Stone says:

"The Exception proves the Rule" is Archaic english and almost universally misunderstood.Translated into modern usage it would be " the exception tests the rule".The use of "proves" comes from the habit of members of the guild of gunmakers in Great Britain who would send fireararms to a proof house where they would be loaded with a much larger charge of powder and ball and touched off remotely to see if they were sound,or would blow up.Most firearms are still "proven" with what is called a "blue pill" load which generates pressures much higher than normal.

Notice it's foreign workers, at least they take care of their own.

I've long thought US cities should do stuff like this. End up paying for itself in the long run.
