Columnist Jack Anderson's suggestions on how to do business in the United States
The following suggestions were written by Jack Anderson, a well-known U.S. political columnist. His suggestions for his children upon entering the business world may give our international business readers some insight into how to do business in the United States.
1. In all endeavors,
guide your life by the principle of JMM: Judgment, Moderation, and
Maturity.
2. Never, through
either word or action, speak ill of anyone. Exception: If asked
to evaluate another person's performance, be clinical (see item 4), and
include praise as well as criticism.
3. Arrive at work
five minutes early, never look at the clock, and leave five minutes late.
4. Business is
business, not personal. Do not make it personal or take it personally.
(Corollary: Don't hold grudges because today's opponent may be tomorrow's
ally. Just remember who cannot be trusted.)
5. You owe your
complete loyalty in all things legal to the company writing your paycheck.
6. Business comes
ahead of your social life. (Corollary: Volunteer.)
7. Be honorable.
Do not make unauthorized long-distance phone calls or use company time
or supplies for private purposes. Local personal calls should be
kept to an absolute minimum and then ony for the briefest possible time.
8. Be honest.
