During the summer of 2000, a friend who is very knowledgeable about the history of the Boston music scene, had been given a box of tapes, photos and miscellaneous trinkets associated with a group called "thee Wytches". Roman, being a rather learned lad, searched his archives for this group and came up empty. The only leads were some names, dates and locations...pretty much, a group of late teens with attitudes, 1966 and Salem, Massachusetts. Respectively. Now you have to understand, Roman is rather obsessive about these things and refused to let this die. As such, began blasting newsgroups and spamming anyone who had the misfortune of leaving him an email address; including myself. One night I was hanging out with some old high school buddies and mentioned to an associate if his brother in-law had ever heard of the group. Being a old friend, and as old friends do, he dutifully asked his brother in-law. You see, this brother in-law was quite a guitar slinger as a youth and made quite a name for himself and his group. His first name being John, the group was of course Johnny and The Pirates. And bingo, a hit. Indeed John knew a recently retired local cop who was the bands handyman, gofer and now historian. To get Roman off my back, I made the connection and thus I got sucked into this great crusade to find out who were "thee Wytches". What transpired are the recollections of "Frank C." as told Roman. Recollections that illustrate the lunacy associated with a bunch of kids with trust funds, a semblance of musical know how and a complete disregard for convention. Very much like Roman except no trust fund. -SM February 2001 |
